On Monday December 4, 2006 at a meeting in Ottawa the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, CFIA agreed to drop the compliance orders against the Renfrew Bakery. At the meeting CFIA Regional Director -Vicky Therrien confirmed the following to Pam & Rick Powers;
4. The Powers will need to purchase a "Black magic marker" and identify the quanity of buns in a package.
Apparently, the CFIA could not read nor understand their own regulations and put many bakery owners through a hell of stress because of incompetence.
Many thanks to Scott Reid MP, Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington for accepting the OLA briefing package and his determined efforts to bring sense and reasonableness to the CFIA. In addition our thanks are extended to Chuck Strahl Minister of Agriculture and his aide Donald Boucher for reining in the stampede of stupidity that has overcome CFIA bureaucrats.
The Landowners will proceed with our Victory rally at noon on Friday December 8, 2006 in Renfrew, and encourage all members and supporters to come and celebrate another landowner victory.

Chairs Successful Renfrew Bakery Meeting
Ottawa, Ontario… Cheryl Gallant, MP, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke is pleased to confirm the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), have pledged to work with Renfrew Bakery owners Rick and Pam Power to meet safety food requirements.
“It became clear fairly quickly that there was a misunderstanding of what was required of the Powers and what they thought would be necessary in order to meet the new regulations, said MP Gallant. “I am very pleased with the personal interest Conservative Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl took in the plight of the Powers. I spoke directly to the Minister about the Renfrew bakery on more than one occasion. A member of his staff was present at this most recent meeting as an expression of that interest.”
The Renfrew bakery meeting was chaired by MP Cheryl Gallant, with Rick and Pam Power, officials from the CFIA, a representative from the Minister of Agriculture Chuck Strahl`s office, as well as Scott Reid, MP for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox-Addington.
“From what I understand, the Powers were provided with a copy of the regulations but were not told clearly which of those regulations did and did not apply to their business,” remarked MP Gallant. “Based on the initial encounter, assumptions were made that got blown out of proportion. Many of those regulations that the Powers thought they had to follow are in fact intended for the large distribution bakeries.”
“As Rick Power said during the meeting, there is a real difference between a chain bakery and his bakery, where the consumer has access to the actual people who make the product,” said Cheryl Gallant, MP. “I am pleased to have had this opportunity to stand up for the people of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke,” concluded Cheryl Gallant, MP.
