The Kings Table, Fish & Chip… "and so much more…" most certainly describes The Cooks’ latest find. To say it’s your local Fish & Chip shop would be an injustice. Although the signature dish is the Fried Halibut & Chips, the menu is so much more. Owned by husband and wife team — Louis and Ursula, the two have created a great place in The Beach that is sure to succeed.

Daily specials are on the black board near the open kitchen in a pleasantly decorated and comfortable dining area seating 24 patrons. The take out traffic was quite heavy while we were there, as this new addition to The Beach has obviously become a neighbourhood favorite already.

The black board boasts daily gourmet specials of soups (today it is seafood chowder or carrot), salads and fish specials — it is here that owner / chef Louis’ cooking skills really shine.

Louis treated The Cooks to his own tasting menu, which started with Halibut and Chips. Don’t ask Louis about this ‘secret batter recipe’ … he will only laugh with a gleam in his eyes saying, "you just have to come back." We attempted to squeeze it out of him but to no avail.

This sample of Fish & Chips was very light and tasty served with hand cut fries and homemade Kings tartar sauce — another of Louis’ creations.

We were then treated to the salad special — Caprese salad consisting of mixed greens, tomato, cheese, and olives in a homemade vinaigrette.

Our next dish came from the black board fish specials. Even our server, Brenda brought us our plates with anticipation — I think The Cook’s love for food kind of showed…

We dined on a couple samples of the feature specials. One portion was grilled Halibut with a lemon hollandaise sauce — the best yet, the other poached Halibut in a beet hollandaise sauce served with sautéed bok choy. A must try if you go!

Just when we thought we could sample no more — Louis made a delicious funnel cake with marinated strawberries, ice cream, and powdered sugar, drizzled in maple syrup. The perfect end to a wonderful meal.

Daily desserts are available made by Ursula, who insisted we also take home her rhubarb cake (loved it).

The menu also provides for more variety in the Halibut or salmon fillet preparation — served with salad or chip or salad and a ‘few’ chips prepared with a Cajun spice or white wine sauce. We will have to return for these delicacies on another outing.

The meal served to us was as we were told ‘Fit only for Kings & Queens’ was nothing short of the tastiest Fish we’ve ever tried — done to perfection. What makes King’s Table stand out is the additional 5 star selections available in the daily specials.

Open only since March (2006), Louis and Ursula will do exceptional and we wish them all the best in their new venture.
